The Annapolis School of Seamanship has announced the upcoming course dates and topics for their classes scheduled for Summer/Fall 2014. The courses are designed to educate and empower mariners with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed, safe decisions when operating and maintaining a vessel.
Master Mariner Captain’s License up to 100-Gross Tons
August 4-15: (M-F) 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., or September 15-26: (M-F) 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuition $1,295.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
This course is for mariners who wish to obtain a Master Mariner Captain’s License up to 100-Gross Tons. Master Mariners are able to operate both inspected and uninspected vessels up to the tonnage printed on their license.
- USCG approved course – completion certificate accepted in lieu of testing at the Coast Guard Regional Exam Center (REC)
- Module topics include: Rules of the Road, Deck General, Deck Safety, Navigation General, and Chart Plotting

Marine Diesel Basics
July 26-27, August 16-17, or September 27-28: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $395.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St.., Annapolis
Through both lecture and hands-on instruction, students will learn to understand, troubleshoot, and perform basic preventative maintenance and repairs on diesel engines.
- Instruction utilizes both a working and cutaway diesel engine
- Covers all types of diesel engines and is not brand specific
- No previous experience necessary

Marine Electrical System Basics
October 4-5: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $395.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
This course provides students with a basic understanding of marine electrical systems and circuitry by covering basic electrical theory, system design, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Instruction utilizes multimeters and electrical circuitry developed for the course

Marine Weather Basics
September 6-7: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $395.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
This introductory course gives students foundational knowledge about local and regional weather and teaches students how to use this information to make informed and safe decisions on the water.
- Topics include: Weather terminology, cloud identification, Beaufort Scale, tides & currents, and anatomy of a marine weather forecast

Basic Navigation & Piloting
August 2-3, or September 13-14: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $349.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
This course provides students with both lecture and hands-on instruction utilizing charts, plotting tools, government publications and workbook exercises. Upon completion of the class, students are able to create a passage plan, plot a course and position, and perform various navigational fixes and calculations.
- Topics include: chart orientation, plotting, use of government publications, such as tide tables

Navigation II: iNav
August 4-5, or September 15-16: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $349.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
This course focuses on marrying traditional chart navigation with electronic navigation systems, tablets and smartphones. Students will use the Annapolis School of Seamanship bridge simulator, allowing students to engage in a virtual voyage in all weather conditions and can interface with tablet based navigation systems.
- Instruction focuses on electronic navigation, marine multifunction displays, and tablet navigation
- Pre-requisite: Basic Navigation & Piloting or solid foundation in traditional paper chart navigation and plotting

Cruising the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)
September 20: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuition $195.00, Annapolis School of Seamanship at 601 Sixth St., Annapolis
Students will gain firsthand knowledge of what to expect traveling up or down the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from professional captain and ICW cruiser, Paul Truelove. This course combines lecture, discussion and hands-on exercises to prepare a boater for an unforgettable adventure on the Intracoastal Waterway.
