Annapolis Police go fishing with the kids

fishThe week of July 21st saw the Annapolis Police Department holding its annual youth fishing camp for the 14th year.  Youngsters from Annapolis learned how to fish with the help of officers, civilian employees, and volunteers.  Longtime participant Lt. Kevin Krauss even took vacation from his job as Commander of Criminal Investigations to go out on the boats with the kids one day during the camp.

The children visited Annapolis Recreation and Park’s Waterworks Park and Truxtun Park to fish, but the highlight of the week was going out with members of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association (MSSA) who provided their boats, equipment, and expertise.

Captains Greg Shute, Skip Zinck, Jeremy Crawford, Jon Canatella, and Rick Nadolny headed out with the kids and helpers from Sandy Point State Park on Wednesday morning.  They fished on the Chesapeake Bay with officers and caught six rockfish and numerous smaller fish.  The kids took rockfish filets home that evening for dinner.

The week culminated with a cookout at Truxtun Park.  The kids fished and enjoyed a kayak trip on Spa Creek with Kayak Annapolis.

The camp educates children about basic fishing techniques and water safety, as well as promoting the idea of environmental stewardship.  During the week the children develop a positive relationship with police officers.

“The camp’s foundation rests on the necessary trust and understanding between our community and police officers, and there’s no better start than with children,” said Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop.

The police department could not hold this camp without the help of many people in the community.  Donations were received from the Eastport Civic Association, a long time supporter of the camp, Boatyard Bar & Grill, a business that supports many local organizations, and the Annapolis Lions Club.  Members of Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association donated their time, equipment, and boats to ensure the children had a great time fishing on the Bay.
