Alleged hate group claims victory in Anne Arundel council race

The League of the South, a group dubbed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center**, has claimed that “their” candidate has won the Republican nomination for Anne Arundel County Council in District 5.  Michael Peroutka, an attorney specializing in debt collection, beat Maureen Carr-York by 38 votes in the primary election in June.

While he has been relatively non-responsive to most media since his primary victory, on July 8th,  Michael Hill, President of the League of the South said.

The League office received the following e-mail today. This means that after a vote recount, our Southern Nationalist candidate won the primary election!

Them email sent to the League from Peroutka read as follows:

Dr. Hill: I am happy to report that after all votes were counted, we were ahead by 38 votes. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow. They will come after me in the general election in November. Not only locally, but also from across the country. There are many, as you well know, who hate the idea of Godly, constitutional government. I ask you to ask the membership for prayers and for whatever financial support they can muster. I am grateful for our friendship and for the work of LS.
Please accept my thanks for your hospitality in Alabama. I will be in touch.
Michael [Peroutka]

The League of the South has three guiding principles:

  1. exposing the corruption, greed, and criminality of the current government in Washington, DC;
  2. promoting the survival, well-being, and independence of the Southern people; and
  3. making The League of the South a strong, viable organization that will lead us to Southern independence.

Many have called for Republican leaders to distance themselves from Peroutka including gubernatorial candidates Larry Hogan and Anthony Brown, Carl Snowden of the Caucus of African-American Leaders.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Peroutka is scheduled to meet with the director of the Maryland Republican Party today, who has concerns about the GOP being associated with the candidate.

From the Sun, Joe Cluster, Director of the Republican Party  said he’ll explain to Peroutka that the party is not comfortable with an association with the League of the South. “If he wants to continue to be part of these organizations, we can’t do much to help him out,” Cluster said.

But it appears from the League’s statement and Peroutka’s email that there is no intention of distancing himself from the group.

His general election opponent had some strong words.

Patrick Armstrong, candidate for Anne Arundel County Council District 5 issued the following statement last night, “On July 8, The League of the South emailed its members celebrating the victory of Michael Peroutka as Republican candidate for Anne Arundel County Council District 5, stating ‘our Southern Nationalist candidate won the primary election.’ Michael Peroutka cannot distance himself from this group, which has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. This election is about very clear choices for the families of Broadneck, Arnold, Severna Park and Millersville, and in fact, all families in Anne Arundel County. Voters will decide if they want to be represented by a reasonable, collaborative, homegrown candidate who supports our teachers, schools and public safety officials and will value and protect taxpayers’ investments or to be represented by a man whose extreme views will leave our communities in isolation having no voice at all on the many critical issues facing the County Council and our communities.”

** UPDATE: According to a twitter follower and Breitbart, the SPLC was been removed as a resource for hate crimes  in April of 2014.
