The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is hosting its first two free science lectures of the summer on June 17 and July 15.
SERC Evening Lecture Series
Talk: “Global Shipping and Marine Invasions: The Beginning of the Anthropocene”
Speaker: Dr. Ian Davidson
Summary: Most experts date the start of the Anthropocene—the “Age of Humans”—to the rise of fossil fuels 250 years ago. But what if it began much earlier? Dr. Ian Davidson shows how humans have moved invasive species across oceans since the Age of Discovery and how, with the public’s help, we can keep a watchful eye on them today. For more information visit www.serc.si.edu.

At SERC, we are finding more ways to involve the community in environmental science research, from archaeology to experimental forests. Come learn more about citizen science projects all over the world and find out how you can get involved at SERC.
