A MTA police officer has shot and killed a suspect at the Cromwell light rail station for the Maryland Transportation Authority.
At 6:29 p.m. Anne Arundel County officers responded to assist the Mass Transit Administration Police (MTA) with an officer involved shooting.
Investigators learned that the MTA police officer was flagged over by two citizens at the Cromwell Light Rail Station bus loop shelter. The citizens asked for the officer to intervene with another individual, a female, who was also inside of the bus loop shelter. The officer, a female who is a 3-year veteran of the force, attempted to speak to the suspect. The suspect was uncooperative and began to assault the officer. The suspect choked the officer and pulled her hair. According to witnesses, the officer could not break free from the suspect. Several other witnesses attempted to control the suspect and get her off of the officer, but they were unsuccessful.
The officer, in fear for her life, was able to remove her service weapon and fire one shot, striking the suspect in her upper leg area. There was only one round fired.
Both the suspect and the officer were transported to local hospitals. The suspect was pronounced deceased. The officer is being treated for non-life the watching injuries.
MTA Police Chief Chief John Gavrilis and Anne Arundel County Police Chief Kevin Davis spoke and agreed it was best for the investigation to be handled by the Anne Arundel County Police Department, but the agencies will be working in a collaborative effort.
The Anne Arundel County Police Criminal Investigations Division continues to investigate this incident.
The Light Rail and MTA service continues to run as normal.
The suspect’s next of kin has yet to be notified and therefore her identify will not be released at this time.
The officers name will also be released at a later time.
