County seeks volunteers for boards and commissions

VolunteersAnne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman today announced there are several openings for residents to serve on the county’s boards and commissions. For those interested in becoming involved in county government, current openings exist for the HIV/AIDS Commission, Adult Guardianship Review Board, Social Services Board and Minority Business Enterprise Committee. Citizens interested in joining an Anne Arundel County board or commission must live in or maintain a business in the county.

“From day one, I have committed to our residents an open and transparent government, one in which they have a seat at the table and a say in the future of our county,” said County Executive Neuman. “Serving on a board or commission is an excellent way not only to observe firsthand how county government works for its citizens, but also to help shape policy by taking an active role in our decision-making processes.”

HIV/AIDS Commission

The purpose of the commission is to provide education and training on the prevention of HIV and AIDS and to promote and enhance the quality of life for persons living with HIV/AIDS by advising the County Executive and the County Council on the coordination and development of government policies, programs, services and allocation of resources for education and prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and community support for persons with HIV/AIDS.

The commission is looking for two citizen members with the following criteria:

• Persons or family members of persons living with HIV/AIDS

• Representatives of organizations or agencies that provide services for or represent persons with HIV/AIDS

• Persons interested in improving the quality of life for persons with HIV/AIDS disabilities

• Persons having expertise in matters pertaining to public health and prevention of HIV/AIDS

Terms of service on the HIV/AIDS Commission are for three years, with no specific term limit. Members are appointed by the County Executive and the commission meets four to six times a year.

Social Services Board

The Social Services Board of Directors advises the Department of Social Services, reviews the annual reports, and reviews and makes recommendations regarding the annual estimates of funds for social services and public assistance purposes with respect to unmet needs in the county.

The county is seeking new members to serve on this board, and is seeking to fill multiple openings. The County Executive appoints members, and terms of service for this board are for three years, with a two-term limit. The board meets monthly and is looking for volunteers to commit to its work and the clients who benefit from Social Services.

Adult Guardianship Review Board

The Adult Public Guardianship Review Board meets to review, at least every six months, each guardianship that a public agency holds, and recommends to the court that they be continued, modified or terminated. The Adult Public Guardianship Review Board of Anne Arundel County provides oversight to the county’s departments of Social Services and Aging and Disabilities regarding their Adult Public Guardianship programs.

The board is specifically seeking an attorney to serve at this time. A member is appointed by the County Executive and the appointment is confirmed by the County Council. Terms of service are for three years with no specific term limit.

Minority Business Enterprise Committee

The Minority Business Enterprise Committee of Anne Arundel County was established as an ad hoc committee to oversee the implementation and operation of the Minority Business Enterprise program.

The committee is seeking new members who run a business in Anne Arundel County. Terms are for two years, appointed by the County Executive, with no specific term limits.
