AACPL summer reading program set to kick off

MilkshakeDuoThe 2014 Summer Reading Club will start with a bang on Friday, June 27 as the nationally acclaimed Milkshake Duo, featured on PBS KIDS and Nick JR, kicks off a summer of reading and science fun at Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL).

Along with Sneaks the Library Cat, band members Lisa and Mikel will get kids of all ages dancing in Marley Station Mall’s center court starting at 11 AM in celebration of this year’s Summer Reading Club theme: Fizz, Boom, Read! Summer Reading Club signups will be available for all as the kids rock out to the music.

Individual branch kickoff events begin June 19 and continue through June 28, while special Summer Reading Club programming starts at every library during the week of July 7. The science-themed events will run at all 15 library branches through early August. The Summer Reading Club will culminate with an on-field parade during Summer Reading Night at the Bowie Baysox on August 15.

Registration continues throughout the summer. Any public or private school that logs a 25 percent participation rate or higher will be put in the running for the sought-after Chesapeake Cup, which will be awarded this fall.

In addition to six weeks of reading, prizes and events for kids in preschool through the elementary grades and their families, there will be a contest for teens to create video trailers for books they’ve read this summer. An AACPL flash drive or stylus pen will be awarded to any teen who completes a short book trailer. A grand prize will be awarded to the winner of the contest at a ceremony on August 6.

The library’s summer program also includes special activities and prizes for adults. Families and adults are invited to take in one of two outdoor jazz concerts by local favorite Rob Levit: at 7 pm on July 29 at the Crofton Community Library, and at 7 pm on July 31 at the Brooklyn Park Community Library.

There will be something for everyone to love during the Fizz, Boom, Read! festivities this summer.
