Rock Cats shell Baysox

Baysox ImageThe Rock Cats (14-20) blasted two more home runs Sunday afternoon in an 11-1 win over the Baysox (18-18) to secure a series split. The 10-run loss was the worst of the season for the Baysox.

The New Britain Rock Cats hit nine home runs against the Baysox in the four game series and scored 18 runs on 29 hits in their two wins in the final two games of the series.

The Rock Cats struck first in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally against Baysox starter Tyler Wilson. Brandon Waring reached on a fielding error by Baysox third baseman Niuman Romero to start off the inning. Corey Wimberly then drew a two-out walk and the Rock Cats followed with four consecutive hits to bring four unearned runs home to take the lead.

New Britain picked up another run in the top of the fourth inning. Matt Koch drew a one-out walk, moved to second base on a Mike Kvasnicka single to right field and scored on a Corey Wimberly double to center field to give the Rock Cats a 5-0 lead.

Reynaldo Rodriguez gave the Rock Cats a 6-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox reliever Fabio Castillo.

The Baysox got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against New Britain starter Matt Summers. Zane Chavez drew a lead off walk, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out single to center field from Sharlon Schoop to make the score 6-1.

The Rock Cats blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning with another big home run. The first two batters of the inning walked and Tony Thomas then hit a three-run homer to center field to give New Britain a 9-1 lead.

New Britain added to their lead in the top of the eighth against Baysox reliever Juan Morillo. Wimberly hit a one-out single to center field and Thomas followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Daniel Ortiz brought Wimberly home with a single to right field. With two outs, Thomas scored on another wild pitch to make the score 11-1.

Wilson pitched four innings and allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking two in the loss. Castillo pitched three innings and allowed four runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two. Morillo pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two.

After an off day Monday, LHP Tim Berry (1-1, 4.35) takes the mound for the Baysox Tuesday as the team plays the first game in a four game road series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by RHP Clayton Blackburn (2-3, 2.78).

The Baysox depart for a seven game road trip with stops in Richmond and Reading Tuesday, May 13 and return home Monday, May 19 for a four game homestand against the Erie SeaWolves.
