I must say–Martin Short rocked the house

Martin Short, Rams Head On Stage, Maryland Hall

Rams Head On Stage knocked another one out of the ballpark tonight with An Evening With Martin Short.  For those who have been living under a rock, Martin Short is an actor, comedian, writer, singer, voice actor, and producer. He is best known for his television comedy on SCTV and Saturday Night Live and his movies including Three Amigos and Father of the Bride among others.  Short’s creative and comic genius created enduring characters such as Ed Grimley, the man with a Pat Sajak fetish; and Jiminy Glick who never fails to elicit a guffaw from his guests.

The show at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts was a sold-out show for 850 lucky people. The evening was filled with a peppering of stories of Short’s family, behind the scenes looks at his career, and a great story about pissing off Frank Sinatra at Johnny Carson‘s house for screwing up ordering a Jack Daniels!

Short’s solid 90 minute show was accompanied by a pianist and featured several guest appearances including  three local men, Luke Griffen, Key Sar, and Peter Nish to reprise the Three Amigos. As Short sang, he relied on the trip to to the iconic Three Amigos Dance–complete with the thrusts–latent thrusting as Short pointed out to Sar!

Local musician, Annapolis Irish Festival organizer, and bagpiper, Eddie McGowan had a cameo as well as he played the Martin Short Bagpipes in a skit reprised from the star’s start at SCTV. McGowan, clad in full Irish kilt, handily grabbed Short’s leg and pumped it as he ‘played’ Amazing Grace!

But perhaps the best surprise of the night was Pat Sajak. Sajak is a local resident and he was in attendance with his wife Lesley, son Patrick, and other family members. Reprising the role of Jimimy Glick, Short interviewed Sajak who was able to hold his own with a straight face for a little; but after Glick crawled over him on the chair, it was all over. Mission accomplished. While the appearance was pre-arranged, the skit was not. Every time Glick/Short slapped Sajak on the knee with a rolled up paper, the game show star jumped almost like getting your knee tapped in a reflex test!

The final guest appearance was none other than Connie DelSignore, president of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitor’s Bureau who came on stage to serve Short a fine glass of champagne as short sang a piece from his Tony Award winning performance in Little Me.

Obviously, the show closed out with a standing ovation.

Rams Head On Stage has been putting on larger shows at Maryland Hall since December and they are always a sellout and really some of the shows you never want to miss!  Michael Bolton played in December, Dave Mason was here in January, the Indigo Girls played last month, and now Martin Short.  I wonder what’s coming up next?
