Curve walk off against Baysox

Baysox 2013IMG_9671After battling back from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, the Baysox lost 6-5 on a Mel Rojas walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon. The Baysox outhit the Curve 10-8 and benefitted from three errors, but only hit 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The Curve were able to take advantage of the Baysox on the base paths, stealing four bases during the game, including a critical base in the bottom of the ninth inning to aid the rally. The four stolen bases against tied a season-high for the Baysox.

Altoona scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. Keon Broxton hit a lead off single to center field and later was able to score on a Jarek Cunningham sacrifice fly with the help of a passed ball to give the Curve a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning against Altoona starter Joely Rodriguez. With one out, K.D. Kang and Sharlon Schoop each singled and Niuman Romero walked to load the bases. Christian Walker brought one run home on an infield single but Dariel Alvarez then grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Curve took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Drew Maggi drew a two-out walk and Mel Rojas followed with a home run to give Altoona a 3-1 lead.

Bowie got one run back in the top of the sixth inning against Altoona reliever Joan Montero. Garabez Rosa hit a one out single to the pitcher, moved to second base on a throwing error by the pitcher and scored on a fielding error by Rojas in center field to make the score 3-2.

Altoona tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Broxton hit a lead off triple and after Berry struck out the next batter, Juan Morillo replaced him on the mound. Morillo immediately surrendered another triple to Cunningham who later scored when Ralph Henriquez reached on a fielder’s choice to make the score 5-2.

The Baysox cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Romero hit a one out single to center field and Walker followed with a single to left field. Alvarez reached on a force out that eliminated Walker at second base to put runners on the corners with two outs. Montero threw a wild pitch that allowed Romero to score, Alvarez then stole third base and scored on a second wild pitch to make the score 5-4.

Bowie came back to tie the game 5-5 in the top of the eighth inning thanks to a Ronald Bermudez solo home run off Altoona reliever Quinton Miller.

The Curve won the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Fabio Castillo. Andy Vasquez hit a lead off single to third base, stole second base and scored on a Rojas single to right field to win the game 6-5.

Berry pitched five and one-third innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking three and striking out seven in the no decision. Morillo pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. Castillo took the loss, recording one out in the ninth and allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Miller got the win for Altoona, pitching the final two innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.

RHP Matt Bischoff (1-2, 3.60) takes the mound for the Baysox Thursday as the team plays the first game in a four game home series with the New Britain Rock Cats. He will be opposed by LHP Sean Gilmartin (3-2, 3.77)
