The Baysox completed a four game sweep of the Erie SeaWolves with a 6-3 win Thursday night. David Freitas broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a three-run homer to put the Baysox over the top.
“First base was open so I told myself to be selective in case they were trying to pitch around me or walk me,” Freitas said. “The first pitch was a cutter away off the plate and I kept telling myself to wait for that one pitch I could hit. He ended up throwing it and I put a good swing on it. I barreled it and I knew it would score the guy from third and it ended up going out of the park.”
The Baysox are now six games over .500, which is the team’s high-water mark for the season. This is the team’s second four-game home sweep of the season as they also won four games at home against Harrisburg to start the year.
Making his first start after spending a month on the Disabled List with a sprained knee, Baysox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez did not show any rust. He threw five innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out two and walking two in the no decision.
Christian Walker continued his hot streak and put the Baysox ahead early with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Kyle Ryan. It was Walker’s team-leading 11th home run of the season.
The SeaWolves tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning against Rodriguez. Ramon Cabrera hit a one-out double to right field and scored on a two-out Steven Moya single to center field.
The Baysox added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Walker reached on a throwing error by Erie shortstop Dixon Machado and scored on a double to center field from Dariel Alvarez to make the score 2-1.
Erie took it’s first lead of the game 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning against Baysox reliever Fabio Castillo. Cabrera hit a lead off double to right field and moved to third base on a single to left field from Dean Green. Moya brought Cabrera home with a single to left field and Green scored from third base with one out after a throwing error by second baseman David Adams who was trying to turn an inning ending double play.
The Baysox tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Sharlon Schoop hit a one-out single to right field that moved Johnny Ruettiger to third base where he scored on an Adams groundout that made the score 3-3.
Bowie broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning against Erie reliever Guido Knudson. Ronald Bermudez hit a lead off single to right field and Michael Ohlman followed with a walk. With one out, Freitas hit a three-run homer to left-center field to give the Baysox a 6-3 lead.
Castillo pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Baysox reliever Luis Ayala pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing two hits and striking out one while picking up the win. Baysox closer Oliver Drake pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one batter for his ninth save of the season.
Knudson took the loss for Erie, pitching one and one-third innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one.
LHP Anthony Vasquez (0-3, 4.60) takes the mound for the Baysox Friday as the team plays the first game in a four game road series with the Harrisburg Senators.
The Baysox depart for a four game road series in Harrisburg Friday, May 23 and return home for a six-game homestand Tuesday, May 27 against the Akron RubberDucks and Richmond Flying Squirrels. Mountain Man from the show Duck Dynasty will be at the Baysox game Thursday, May 29.
