The Baysox split a doubleheader with Akron Wednesday evening, winning the first game 3-1 and losing the second game 5-1. The Baysox scored four runs during the two games, but did not record a single RBI during the 14 innings of baseball.
The Baysox were aided by a number of Akron mistakes in their Game 1 win, scoring three runs but not recording a single RBI. Two Baysox runs came as a result of wild pitches and the third was scored after a throwing error.
The Baysox jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the second inning against Akron starter Will Roberts. Michael Ohlman hit a two-out single to center field and moved to third base on a David Adams single to center field. Ohlman then scored on a wild pitch to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.
Akron tied the game in the top of the sixth inning against Baysox starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Joe Wendle hit a one out single to left field and Francisco Lindor followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Wendle scored on a Bryan LaHair groundout to tie the game 1-1.
Bowie took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning. Dariel Alvarez drew a lead off walk and K.D. Kang followed with a single to center field. Ronald Bermudez then reached on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error by the catcher that allowed Alvarez to score from second. Ohlman followed with another sacrifice bunt that moved runners to second and third with one out. Shawn Armstrong then replaced Roberts on the mound and threw a wild pitch that allowed Kang to score and give the Baysox a 3-1 lead.
Rodriguez pitched five and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out five batters and walking two in the no decision. Baysox closer Oliver Drake picked up the win, throwing the final one and one-third innings and striking out two batters.
Roberts took the loss for Akron, pitching five and one-third innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two and walking three.
The Baysox offense never got going in the Game 2 loss, tying a season-low with two hits. Akron starter Jordan Cooper carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before surrendering a walk and a single.
Akron struck first in the top of the fourth inning against Baysox starter Anthony Vasquez. Wendle hit a lead off double to center field and Vasquez walked the next three batters to bring the first run home. Tony Wolters then grounded into a double play to plate a run and Ronny Rodriguez followed with an RBI double to left field. The final run of the inning scored when Charlie Valerio reached on a fielding error by second baseman Garabez Rosa to make the score 4-0.
The RubberDucks added a run in the top of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Luis Ayala. Bryson Myles hit a lead off infield single and Wolters followed with a walk. Rodriguez then doubled to center field to bring a run home and make the score 5-0.
The Baysox avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh inning against Akron reliever Adam Miller. Christian Walker hit a leadoff double to center field and Alvarez followed with a walk. Kang grounded into a double play that moved Walker to third base where he scored when Rosa reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to make the score 5-1.
Vasquez pitched four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits while striking out three and walking three in the loss. Ayala pitched one inning and allowed one run on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Baysox reliever Juan Morillo pitched the final two innings, not allowing a hit but walking three batters while also striking out three.
Cooper earned the win for Akron, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking one batter and striking out six.
The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 1 for a six game homestand against the Akron RubberDucks and Richmond Flying Squirrels.
