Baysox snatch win from Rockcats

Baysox 2013IMG_9611The Baysox (17-16) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and needed a double play with the tying run on third base in the top of the ninth to hold on for a 6-5 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (12-19) Thursday night.

Bowie never trailed New Britain until the top of the eighth inning when the Rock Cats scored two runs against Baysox reliever Marcel Prado to break a 3-3 tie. The Baysox were then able to rally in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead thanks to a two-out, two-RBI bases loaded single from Sharlon Schoop.

With the Baysox clinging to a one run lead, closer Oliver Drake walked leadoff batter Mike Kvasnicka in the top of the ninth inning. Kvasnicka moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch and Drake then walked Tony Thomas to put runners on the corners with one out. To complete the save, Drake was then able to induce a 6-3 double play.

The Baysox got off to a quick start with a run in the bottom of the first inning against New Britain starter Sean Gilmartin. Schoop hit a lead off double to left field, moved to third base on a Niuman Romero single and scored on a Dariel Alvarez sacrifice fly to center field.

Reynaldo Rodriguez tied the game for the Rock Cats in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left field against Baysox starter Matt Bischoff.

Bowie took the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, Johnny Ruettiger singled to center field and Schoop walked to load the bases. Romero then brough two runs home with a single to left field to give the Baysox a 3-1 lead.

New Britain came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. With two outs, Rodriguez singled to shortstop, Daniel Ortiz singled to left field and Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kyle Knudson then brought home two runs with a single up the middle to tie the game 3-3.

The Rock Cats took their first lead of the night in the top of the eighth inning against Prado. Kennys Vargas hit a lead off double to right field and scored on a single to center field from Rodriguez. Rodriguez went to second base on the throw home, moved to third on an Ortiz single to right field and scored when Waring grounded into a double play to make the score 5-3.

The Baysox came right back to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning against New Britain reliever Lester Oliveros. Alvarez hit a lead off single to right field and Ronald Bermudez followed with a walk. With one out, Michael Ohlman walked to load the bases and the first run scored when Garabez Rosa reached on a fielding error by shortshop A.J. Pettersen. With two outs, Schoop brought the final two runs of the inning home with a single to shallow right field to give the Baysox a 6-5 lead.

Bischoff pitched six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four in the no decision. Prado pitched two innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two in the win. Drake pitched the ninth inning and walked two batters while picking up his sixth save.

Oliveros took the loss for New Britian, pitching one inning and allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while walking two batters.
