Schuh campaign questions Neuman’s increased expenses

Steve Schuh

Steve SchuhLaura Neuman’s budget for this year, which included a proposed $89 million spending increase and increased the property tax, also included big increases in salaries, travel expenses and additional positions on her personal office staff.

“Laura Neuman spent nearly $800,000 more in taxpayer money for her own office this year compared to last year,” said Schuh for County Executive Campaign Manager Diane Croghan. “Some of this money was used to give executive staff large salaries and to hire politically-connected employees who work on her campaign. Laura Neuman is taking more of your money and using it for her personal benefit.”

Expenditures included:

  • Added a second lobbyist with a full-time employee already on staff
  • Hired a member of the Anne Arundel County Central Committee as an “economist” with a $110,000 salary
  • Hired a former president of the Severna Park Republican Women’s Club as a constituent services representative
  • Added two assistants to the Director of Communications
  • Increased the salaries of the Chief of Staff and Director of Communications by a combined total of more than $60,000
  • Increased her travel budget from $2,500 to $18,000. She spent $8,000 on a trip to Ocean City last summer, according to County records.

“There was no need to hire additional staff in the County Executive’s Office or spend thousands of dollars on travel,” Croghan said. “This is taxpayer money, and it should be used appropriately. Giving Republican insiders high paying jobs and then having them show up on your campaign team does not give you a Republican resume.”
