Rubber Ducks sweep Baysox

Baysox 2013IMG_9950The Baysox (8-8) were swept in a three game home series by the Akron RubberDucks (9-7) after a 3-1 loss Saturday afternoon. The team has lost a season-high three games in a row and is now at .500 for the first time since the season started.

Despite outhitting the RubberDucks, the Baysox managed just one run on a home run. Entering the game, the Baysox led the league in hits and doubles, but uncharacteristically struggled to string hit together Saturday.

Making a spot start out of the bullpen for the Baysox, Matt Bischoff pitched a career-high five innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out six in the no decision.

“[Catcher David] Freitas called a good game – I depend on what he is going to call,” Bischoff said. “I threw a couple good sliders and I had a good fastball today. I thought he did a really good job calling pitches today. “

Giovanny Urshela gave Akron a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a lead off home run over the left field fence against Bischoff.

Christian Walker tied the game 1-1 for the Baysox in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field off Akron starter Gabriel Arias. It was the second home run of the season for Walker and his second in as many games.

Alex Lavisky hit another lead off home run for Akron in the top of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Jason Gurka to give the RubberDucks the lead. Tyler Naquin was then hit by a pitch and Francisco Lindor walked to put two runners on base. Joe Wendle singled to left field to bring Naquin home and make the score 3-1.

Gurka pitched three innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one in the loss. Baysox reliever Fabio Castillo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, walking one batter and striking out one.

Arias earned the win for Akron, pitching six innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out three.

After an off day Sunday, RHP Tyler Wilson (2-0, 2.60) takes the mound for the Baysox Monday as the team begins a four game home series with the Erie SeaWolves.

The Baysox are home through Thursday, April 24 for an eight-day, seven-game homestand against Akron and Erie. Promotional highlights include the Mutt Monday, April 21 beginning at 6:35 p.m. and Dollar Dog Night Tuesday, April 22 beginning at 6:35 p.m.
