President Clinton addresses Mids at USNA Forrestal Lecture Series

| April 8, 2014 | 1 Comment

Former President William Jefferson Clinton was in town this afternoon to speak to the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy.  The address was part of the Forrestal Lecture Series.

The address was attended by the Brigade of Midshipmen (4,400) and several hundred delegates who were shuttled from a foreign affairs conference which was being held at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.

During the address, Clinton touched on Edward Snowden (accused leaker) and suggested that he may be an “imperfect messenger” and that his actions have started some well needed discussions on security, privacy, technology, and freedom in the US. The President said that keeping tabs on terrorists is imperative, yet it cannot infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens, no matter the cost.

He also discussed the double edged sword with technology and social media. He used Egypt and the Ukraine as examples of how useful the tools can be to help spread the word and to get the news across the globe. However, he cautioned that the tools used for good, can also be used by the other side.
