Buck bombs the ducks

Baysox 2013IMG_0025After a fantastic opening day ceremony at Canal Park in Akron, Baysox 3B Buck Britton took the air out of the park with a home run on the game’s first pitch. Britton launched the first of his two home runs to right field and the Baysox were on top. Bowie would not trail in a nailbiting 6-3 win.

Britton would provide pop again in the second inning. After DH Zane Chavez tripled home a run with his first Eastern league hit with two down Britton went back to work. He homered 20 feet to the right of the 400 foot sign high off the batters eye and Bowie had blasted its way to a 4-0 lead.

That turned out to be enough. Starter Tyler Wilson was sharp striking out a Baysox season-high eight batters in six and 2/3rd innings. He threw 88 pitches with 68 strikes for his second win.

It was not easy though for Bowie. In the fourth inning Wilson allowed a towering three-run home run off the bat of 3B Giovanny Urshela. Akron put the tying run in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but could not even the score.

Bowie added two more runs in the ninth inning as CF Dariel Alvarez singled and went to third base on a gapper to right-center by C Michael Ohlman. LF KD Kang then singled home a run and 2B Garabez Rosa made it 6-3 with a SAC fly for his ninth RBI of the season.

Reliever Marcel Prado, who entered and got out of a seventh inning jam, allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth inning. He then struck out DH Tyler Naquin looking in an epic 12-pitch at-bat. He gave way to reliever Oliver Drake who got consecutive groundouts to end the game. Drake registered the first save for a Baysox pitcher this year.

Indians OF Michael Bourne rehabbed for Akron starting in CF and going 1-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
