Baysox rally in ninth for win

Baysox 2013IMG_9528The Baysox put together a three-run, five-hit ninth inning to overcome a two-run deficit in a 3-2 win in the series opener at The Diamond in Richmond Monday night.

Bowie went to work against Richmond reliever Cody Hall. SS Niuman Romero and 1B Christian Walker singled to open the frame. CF Dariel Alvarez put down a SAC bunt to move the runners up and a balk scored the first run.

With the infield drawn in and one down, RF Chih Hsien Chiang singled through the infield to tied the game at 2-2. A misplay in right field allowed Chiang second base. With two down C Michael Ohlman would get an infield single moving Chiang to third. The Baysox went ahead when DH Brian Ward got his third hit of the night, shooting a single to right field for the lead run.

The Baysox got a strong start from RHP Zach Davies. He was the first pitcher in more than two weeks to get through seven innings and he struck out ten batters. That was both a Baysox season-high and a career-high for the 21-year old righty.

LHP Jason Gurka worked a scoreless eighth for the win (1-1) and RHP Oliver Drake came on to close it out in the ninth inning. Drake worked a 1-2-3 frame for his fourth save of the year.

With the win both Bowie and Akron moved within a half game of first place Richmond in the Eastern League’s Western Division.

The series continues Tuesday, April 29th at 10:35 a.m. with Baysox with LHP Jake Pettit getting the start. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior to first pitch with the Baysox On-Deck Show on wnav.com.

Bowie returns home Friday, May 2nd to open a three-game weekend series with Erie at 6:30 p.m. Call the Baysox at 301-805-6000 or visit online at baysox.com to purchase tickets.
