Baysox bat through cold

Baysox 2013IMG_9949The Baysox (8-5) were one hit shy of their season-high with 15 in a 6-5 win over Erie (5-6) Wednesday afternoon despite temperatures in the 30s.

The Baysox defense struggled in the cold, committing a season-high four errors in the game after having committed just six in the previous 12 games. The four errors led to just one unearned run in the eighth inning.

Bowie continued a common trend with a big first inning to take the early lead against Erie starter Tommy Collier. With one out, Niuman Romero and Christian Walker each singled before Dariel Alvarez hit RBI double to start the scoring. Chih-Hsien Chiang then brought two more runs home with a single to right field and he scored on a two-out Ronald Bermudez double to give Bowie the 4-0 lead.

Erie responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning against Baysox starter Tyler Wilson. With one out, Jason Krizan hit a solo home run to right field and Eugenio Suarez followed with a double to left field. Suarez moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored with two outs on a Ramon Cabrera single to make the score 4-2.

Bowie added to the lead in the top of the sixth inning against Erie reliever Pat McCoy. Bermudez hit a lead off single to center field and moved to third base on a one-out single to right field from Buck Britton. Romero brought Bermudez home with a double to left field and Britton scored on an Alvarez two-out infield single to give the Baysox a 6-2 lead.

The SeaWolves again answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning against Baysox reliever Jason Gurka. Cabrera hit a lead off single to right field and Steven Moya followed with a home run to right field that made the score 6-4.

After the Baysox loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth inning and failed to score, Erie cut the lead to one run in the bottom half of the inning. Facing Baysox reliever Juan Morillo, Dean Green drew a lead off walk and moved to second base on a one-out Corey Jones infield single. Green scored when Jamie Johnson reached on a throwing error by first baseman Christian Walker to make the score 6-5.

Wilson pitched four and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one in the no decision. Gurka pitched two and one-third innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking one. Morillo pitched one inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one and walking one. Closer Oliver Drake picked up the save, pitching one scoreless inning and allowing one hit.
