Baysox homer past SeaWolves

Baysox Fan Fest (4)The Baysox (10-8) hit four home runs and scored nine runs in the first four innings on the way to an 11-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves (6-10) Tuesday night. The team tied a season-high with 16 hits and the 10 run margin of victory was the largest this season.

Baysox first baseman Christian Walker has been on fire, hitting a grand slam tonight and three home runs in the past four games. He is currently on a 10-game hitting streak and is now batting .329 on the season.

“I have been getting my body in a better position to hit – freeing up my hands a little bit,” Walker said. “Once you get a few to fall in for you, it builds a little confidence. It’s definitely easier to hit when you have that confidence on your side.”

Baysox starter Tim Berry had another great outing, throwing six innings and allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out four in his first Double-A win. Berry has allowed just one run in each of his four starts and leads the team with a 1.13 ERA.

The Baysox got on the board quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Warwick Saupold. Buck Britton homered on the first pitch of the inning to right field and Niuman Romero followed with a single to first base. Romero moved to third base after a single by Walker and groundout by Chih-Hsien Chiang before scoring on a groundout by Ronald Bermudez to make the score 2-0.

Bowie kept hitting home runs in the bottom of the third inning to score three more runs and take a 5-0 lead. Chiang hit a one-out solo home run to center field and later in the inning with two outs and Michael Ohlman on base, K.D. Kang homered to right-center field.

The Baysox blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. Johnny Ruettiger, Britton and Romero hit consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs and Christian Walker brought everyone home with a grand slam to give Bowie a 9-0 lead. Reliever Kenny Faulk then replaced Saupold on the mound and retired the next three batters.

Erie got on the board in the top of the fifth inning against Berry. Ramon Cabrera hit a lead off single to center field and Wade Gaynor followed with a walk. With one out, Francisco Martinez doubled to center field to bring Cabrera home and make the score 9-1.

The Baysox added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Erie reliever Ryan Robowski. Walker drew a one-out walk and Chiang doubled to center field. Bermudez brought both runners home with a double to left field to make the score 11-1.

Reliever Juan Morillo pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Baysox, allowing two hits and striking out three. Reliever Ashur Tolliver pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

Saupold took the loss for Erie, pitching three innings and allowing nine runs on 11 hits while striking out one and walking one.

RHP Zach Davies (1-0, 4.26) takes the mound for the Baysox Wednesday as the team plays the third game in a four game home series with the Erie SeaWolves. He will be opposed by LHP Kyle Ryan (1-2, 4.50).
