Marathon duel goes to Akron

Baysox 2013IMG_9784Three times the Baysox failed to score with multiple runners aboard in extra innings and Akron finally broke through. SS Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run to straight away centerfield and the RubberDucks defeated Bowie 2-1.

The Baysox grabbed the lead in the second inning. 1B Christian Walker singled up the middle and CF Dariel Alvarez extended his season-opening hitting streak to nine games with a double down the leftfield line. RF Ronald Bermudez grounded out to drive home Walker with one down and Bowie was on top 1-0. The Baysox would not get another runner into scoring position until the 11th inning.

Akron tied the game in the fourth inning against Baysox starter Tim Berry. 3B Giovanny Urshela doubled to leadoff the frame and scored later on a single from RF Jordan Smith.

Each bullpen was fantastic as the Baysox got three scoreless innings from Jason Gurka, two from Juan Morillo and two from Chris Petrini before the home run. Akron sent five relievers to the hill without allowing a run.

Akron had two major league rehabbers in Michael Bourn and Jason Giambi. Bourn went 1-for-5 with a stolen base playing nine innings in centerfield. Giambi was the designated hitter and was 0-for-2 with a walk striking out swinging twice against Berry.

The series continues Saturday, April 12th with RHP Zach Davies on the hill. First pitch is slated for 2:05 pm with coverage beginning with the Baysox On-Deck Show at 2:15 p.m. on 1430-AM WNAV and 99.9 FM in the city of Annapolis.

Bowie returns home Thursday, April 17th for Pi(e) Night to celebrate the mathematical equation and the tasty treat. Akron will be in town for the 6:35 p.m. start. Get tickets by calling the Baysox at 301-805-6000 or by purchasing online at baysox.com.
