Schooner Woodwind named Anne Arundel’s 1st Maryland Green Travel Partner

WoodwindAnnapolis Sailing Cruises: Schooner Woodwind is the first attraction in Anne Arundel County to be approved as the latest Maryland Green Travel Partner. The company has two, 74 foot sailing schooners that depart up to 4 times daily on public cruises and private events from the Annapolis Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Maryland Green Travel is a free and voluntary self-certification program to promote and recognize sustainable environmental practices by businesses in the tourism industry in Maryland.

Maryland Green Travel is part of the State’s Smart, Green and Growing initiative. Membership in the program is free and encourages accommodations, restaurants, attractions and other organizations to share information on the practices they have in place to reduce the environmental impact of their facilities and services.

“Maryland businesses and other organizations already know that even relatively simple steps to reduce our impact on the environment save money and create a healthier workplace,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “The Maryland Green Travel program provides an opportunity for these organizations to share their stories and inspire others to take steps to protect our air and our water, including the Chesapeake Bay.”

“We believe that the Chesapeake Bay must be treasured. We are committed to showing visitors how to help the Bay and lead by example with our green efforts”, said Captain Jennifer Kaye, Owner and General Manager.

Annapolis Sailing Cruises: Schooner Woodwind powers their vessels mainly by wind power. They have also implemented many green practices throughout the company including, but not limited to: powering the office with green power, maintaining an 80%-plus recycling rate on their sailing cruises and only using recyclable or green disposable foodservice items. The company’s culture includes a strong focus on recycling, using non-disposable items whenever possible and supporting fellow green companies.

Maryland Green Travel is a voluntary program that recognizes and promotes tourism businesses committed to improving their operations in order to reduce their environmental impact. Developed through a partnership of the Maryland Office of Tourism, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Tourism Council in support of the Smart, Green and Growing initiative, the program helps businesses evaluate their procedures, set goals and take specific actions towards environmental sustainability. Businesses that become part of the program are given Maryland Green Travel identification on the official state tourism site, visitMaryland.org, which receives nearly 2 million unique visitors a year.
