aaccStudents, faculty, staff and community members focused on helping black male students succeed are invited to attend the Fourth Annual Black Male Initiative Summit on Thursday, March 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College.

The summit is free and includes dinner, a guest moderator and panelists, who will discuss pathways and ideas that can aid students in reaching their academic goals. The summit will be held in the Center for Applied Learning and Technology (CALT) Room 100 on the Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. Reservations are required by March 6 and may be made by emailing[email protected] or calling 410-777-2530.

The summit has three main goals:

  • To give black male students the opportunity to interact with other black male students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • To help students identify present and potential barriers to success.
  • And, to show students the support programs and services that could positively impact their success.

Guest moderator is attorney Damani K. Ingram. Research shows that black male students traditionally have the most difficulty completing educational goals. AACC began the Black Male Initiative to find ways to improve student achievement through mentoring and working with students to increase their commitment to academic excellence. In the three years since BMI began, retention rates for black male students have increased from 38 percent in 2010-2011 to 44.3 percent in 2012-2013.

The summit is sponsored by the college’s Student Achievement and Success Program and the AACC Foundation Inc. For the latest information, visit www.aacc.edu/SASP/BMI.cfm.
