Broadneck’s version of Les Mis rescheduled

les misWant some rock and punk with your 19th Century French history? Head to Broadneck High School’s production of “Les Misérables,” Feb 27 – March 1.

“People forget that ‘Les Mis’ was produced in the ’80s, and there’s a rock element to the music,” says co-director Emily Cory.

Cory, who is also project manager for Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Performing and Visual Arts magnet program, and her co-directors Andrew Lincoln and Vanessa Pearson, are bringing out those rock elements in their choice of actors and costumes.

The character of Jean Valjean is played by senior Ben Fisher. Fisher has years of vocal training, which gives him the stamina for the role. His years in a rock band influence how he plays the part. (Fisher has been accepted as a vocal performance major at Berklee College of Music in Boston but has not made a final decision on where he will go.)

Costuming the cast of 47 presented challenges. Seth Wenig, executive vice president at NETworks, a theatrical production company in Columbia, lent Broadneck costume pieces that have been used in Broadway and touring productions of “Les Misérables,” “Ragtime,” and “Phantom of the Opera.”

Other pieces came from Broadneck’s costume closet and cast members’ donations. The result favors punk over period correctness while retaining the pathos audiences expect. Bring your tissues.

“Les Misérables” plays Thursday, Feb. 27 @ 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28 @ 7 p.m., Saturday, Mar. 1 @ 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Go to www.bhsmusic.org for ticket information.

The show was postponed because of snow. If you bought tickets for the original dates and need to change the day you go or can’t go at all and want a refund, write to [email protected]. If you go on the same day and time as it says on your ticket (for example, Saturday matinee), you don’t have to change the ticket, you can use it for the new date.
