The Carrie Weedon Science Center has several events scheduled for the upcoming month. The Science Center is located in at 911 Galesville Road in Galesville offers science field trips for elementary school children as well as speaker events for all audiences.

Marvelous Mammals of Anne Arundel County

From the woodland bison which once roamed through the forest to the venomous shrews that lurk in your backyard, this talk will tell the tale of mammals in Anne Arundel County.  Join Kerry Wixted, a Maryland DNR biologist, for a show & tell presentation, featuring furs, tracks and other animal artifacts.   Participants will learn about mammal biology and ways to identify and view some of these curious creatures.

Horseshoe Crabs

Horseshoe crabs are famous for having changed little in morphology since first appearing in the fossil record over 400 million years ago.  Join Linda Andreasen of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to learn about this prehistoric creature’s life history and ecological importance, and meet Carrie Weedon’s newest touch tank resident, Bill, the horseshoe crab!

Honeybees

Rick Derrick, Anne Arundel County Beekeepers Association

One-third of everything we eat is dependent upon the honeybee for pollination. Rick Derrick, and his wife, Betsy have run Free State Bees, one of the largest bee-keeping businesses in Maryland, for years. Rick will talk about honeybee biology and threats to the wild bee population.
