AACC Seeks Teens For International Math Competition

Anne Arundel Community CollegeIf you are a teen who enjoys math or is good at problem-solving, plan to sign up to participate in national mathematics competitions on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Anne Arundel Community College. The tests are free to participants, but preregistration by Feb. 10 is required.

Two exams are offered, each as a 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice examination. The 15th annual American Mathematics Competition 10 (AMC 10) is open to all students in grades 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on Feb. 19. It focuses on problems that can be solved using algebra and geometry concepts.

The 65th annual American Mathematics Competition 12 (AMC 12) is open to all high school students under 19.5 years of age on Feb. 19 and features problems that can be solved using pre-calculus concepts.

The AMC 10 and the AMC 12 aim to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through friendly competition at problem solving in a timed format. In 2013 more than 220,000 students from more than 4,200 schools participated in the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 competitions.

Sponsored by The Mathematical Association of America, the competition is given across the United States, Canada and in many schools abroad. These competitions emphasize mathematical and logical reasoning rather than formulas and computation, so calculators are not allowed. The AMC 12 is one of the gateways to the U.S. and International Mathematical Olympiads.

Details concerning the 2014 AMC competitions are available on the AMC website:    www.maa.org/math-competitions. Information on participating at AACC is available at www.aacc.edu/math.
