Attempted murder in Annapolis

James K. Bennett

On January 30, 2014 officers from the Southern District responded to 116 Defense Highway Annapolis, Maryland. The initial call was for a check subject. The caller indicated that the person had a head injury and was naked from the waist down.

Upon arrival officers were able to determine that the person was the victim and had been sliced across his face by an unknown edged weapon and was bleeding heavily.  Investigation revealed that the victim was in an unoccupied office on the fifth floor of the Conte building with a female companion.  The female’s boyfriend entered and encountered the two.  At that point the boyfriend sliced the victims face with a box cutter and then fled the building.

A suspect description was broadcasted and arriving officers located him as he was attempting to hide in the women’s bathroom of the Wendy’s fast food establishment on Defense Highway and Housley Rd. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

A search of the area around the Wendy’s revealed a yellow box cutter between the hedges and a brick wall.  The victim had non life threatening injuries, but required a significant number of sutures to close his wounds.

Suspect: James Kerry Bennett, 43, of the 200 block of Michele Cir Millersville, MD 21108.

Bennett is being charged with Attempted 1st and 2nd degree murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
