On January 1, members of the Anne Arundel County police department were dispatched to a home on Oakdale Circle in Millersville for a possible suicidal subject. Upon arrival, officers met with a person who was concerned about their relative, later identified as Todd Wheeler. Upon encountering wheeler, officers observed serious injuries to his upper body.

The Anne Arundel County fire department was then requested to the scene and transported Wheeler to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with injuries that appear to have been caused by a chemical or mechanical reaction. Being suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Wheeler’s injuries, officers contacted the police department’s intelligence unit, criminal investigations unit and the fire department’s fire investigation Bureau. Based on the evidence obtained, the investigation of the Edgerly Road home was begun.

The investigation at the Edgerly Road home began at 11:30 AM Thursday morning January 2, and concluded late in the evening on Friday, January 3. During the search of the residence, officials located numerous completed destructive devices. More than 100 pounds of chemicals including acids, fuels, oxidizers and explosive precursors were located. Weapons including guns and knives will also found throughout the home. In addition, controlled dangerous substances and packaging materials were confiscated. The potential damage to any of the homes in the vicinity of the residents would have been extensive if any of the devices would have detonated.

Pursuant to the investigation, Todd Dwight Wheeler, Jr. has been charged with two counts of manufacturing a destructive device, two counts of possessing a destructive device and one count of reckless endangerment. Additional federal and state charges are pending.

Due to the diligent in collaborative efforts of the Anne Arundel County fire investigation unit, police, ATF agents and lab technicians, along with fire department hazardous materials teams from Anne Arundel County and Annapolis city and explosive services, a potentially dangerous situation was mitigated. All hazardous materials and substances, weapons and CDS were removed from this home. The scene is now secure and under control. There is no threat to area residents.
