The Annapolis Senior Activity Center will celebrate Black History Month with four different activities at the center at 119 S. Villa Ave., Annapolis, Md.
The month will kick off with the seniors watching the movie, “The Butler,” at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 11. Directed by Lee Daniels and inspired by a true story, the movie tells the story of a man who served eight presidents during his tenure as a butler in the White House.
Center members are invited to tour the Wiley H. Bates Complex’s Legacy Center and a quilt exhibit at 10 a.m. Feb. 13. The Legacy Center displays historical documents and collections relating to the history of Wiley H. Bates High School, the only African American high school in Anne Arundel County.
The quilt exhibit showcases quilts created by local artists to document African American contributions to American history. These “story quilts” focus on African American communities in Anne Arundel County. Several of the quilters will be part of the tour.

The center is holding a Bates Alumni Day at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 24. Bates alumni can sign up at the Front Desk to attend this event. Alumni can share stories, recognize accomplishments, and enjoy refreshments. They are asked to wear their school colors for a picture.
Anne Arundel Community College instructor Nat Martin will present a condensed history of Motown at 1 p.m. Feb. 26. Founded in 1959, Motown became a huge music factory that assembled the soul and pop classics that changed America.
