On January 14, 2014, approximately 9:45 p.m., the Anne Arundel Police Department received information about a possible missing person. Officers spoke with a relative of 39-year-old Mr. Marc Procaccini, the Principal at Southern High School, who indicated that he had not been seen or heard from since 2:00 a.m. that morning.
Around the time that the missing person report was taken by police, a local breaking news Facebook page posted information indicating that Mr. Procaccini was a critically missing person and a picture of him was also distributed to the public, causing immediate panic and innuendo in the community. To be clear, this information was not distributed by the Police Department. Missing persons cases require a great deal of vetting and many variables and circumstances are usually involved. They are investigated on a case by case basis. Per department policy, the agency will diligently and professionally investigate all reports of missing persons.
Since the time of this report, we have been in close communication with Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Through that communication, we have learned that Mr. Procaccini has requested and was granted leave from Southern High School. At this time, there is no indication of any foul play, it appears that Mr. Procaccini left voluntarily. Although this was categorized as a missing person, this situation is being treated as a check well-being due to the fact that Mr. Procaccini left on his own accord.
We urge people to respect the privacy of Mr. Procaccini and his family due to the sensitive nature of this situation. We are releasing this information in response to numerous media inquiries that resulted from a premature online posting. The Police Department is still attempting to verify Mr. Procaccini’s whereabouts and anyone with information is asked to contact the Anne Arundel County Police Department at 410-222-8610.
