USO Helps Military Children Have Happy Holiday. The United Service Organizations are granting Christmas wishes for hundreds of military children this year, including at Fort Meade, where organizers on Wednesday set up a North Pole full of toys and games for some very happy children. More than 1,000 military kids from the Baltimore- Washington D.C. area gave a wish list to Project USO Elf, which matches up kids with sponsors who go shopping for toys, clothes and bikes.

6 Maryland Schools Earn Blue Ribbon Status.  Six Maryland schools were selected Wednesday as the state’s newest Blue Ribbon recipients. The 2014 Blue Ribbon schools are Frost Elementary School in Allegany County, Linthicum Elementary School in Anne Arundel County, Western School of Technology and Environmental Science in Baltimore County, Northern Garrett High School in Garrett County, Cashell Elementary School in Montgomery County and Robert Goddard French Immersion Elementary-Middle School in Prince George’s County.

Police Arrest Severna Park Suspect.  Anne Arundel County police said a man has been arrested in connection with stealing items from cars in Severna Park. Officers were called to the unit block of Saint Ives Drive in Severna Park for a report of a theft from auto around 6 a.m. Tuesday. The caller told police his vehicle was ransacked overnight. Officers spoke with the victim who described observing a suspicious blue/green Honda Accord with Virginia plates driving through the neighborhood.

Shoplifter Fired Shots From Security Guard’s Gun.  Police said a man who was caught trying to shoplift in Laurel managed to get his hands on a security guard’s gun and fire off shots. Anne Arundel County police officers were called to a Weis Market in the 3300 block of Corridor Marketplace around 8 p.m. Sunday, where a security guard said he tried to take the shoplifter into custody, but the man fought him.
