Challenger Mike Pantelides beat incumbent Mayor Joshua Cohen in one of the tightest mayoral races in Annapolis history. After the election, Pantelides led by a slim 84 votes.

The following day absentee ballots and a malfunctioning machine were counted and after 19.5 hours (ending at 4:40am) the lead had narrowed to 50.

This morning, election officials and lawyers for both sides were present for the counting of the provisional ballots.  This process, which took an additional 9 hours resulted in a net increase of 9, for a total of 59 votes.

Just before the final votes were tallied, Pantelides arrived and addressed the media about his campaign, the process and his thoughts as he was on the verge of becoming Annapolis’ new Mayor.

There was speculation from Mayor Cohen’s campaign that they would file a petition for a recount; but in the end, they felt the difference in the votes was too large to launch an effective challenge.

Shortly after the final results were read, Mike Pantelides addressed his supporters:

At the conclusion of his speech, Mayor Cohen called to congratulate him and wish him the best. He told Pantelides that he was on his way to the Recreation Center to offer his personal congratulations.

Cohen spoke briefly and congratulated his opponent on a good race and offered his full assistance with the transition. Cohen took a moment to thank his campaign staff, election staff, volunteers, and voters. He reiterated his lifelong love for Annapolis and in a parting gesture offered Mike Pantelides an Annapolis City lapel pin saying, “it is my honor to be the first one to pin it on you.”

Pantelides thanked Cohen for his service and congratulated him on a well run campaign as well.
