The Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra, one of America’s premier ragtime orchestras, will bring the thrilling era of silent comedy alive again at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 461 College Parkway, in Arnold, MD on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 7:30 PM.
The program, “The General – Featuring the Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra”, features Buster Keaton’s comedic masterpiece, THE GENERAL, along with ragtime selections celebrating composers J. Russell Robinson, Mel B. Kaufman, Scott Joplin, and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band.
Keaton plays Johnnie Gray, a southern train engineer during the Civil War, who has his beloved locomotive, THE GENERAL, and his girlfriend, Annabelle Lee, stolen by Union Soldiers in a daring raid. A chase ensues, and Keaton saves the South, and his girl, through a series of hilarious events. “The General” has been listed as #18 of 100 on the American Film Institute’s Greatest American Movies of All Time, a part of Roger Ebert’s top 10 films, and listed as #1 in a list of the greatest films of the silent-period by silentera.com.
The film will be accompanied by the music of the Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra, founded in 2010 by Andrew Greene. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, the Peacherine Orchestra recreates a turn-of-the-last-century theatre orchestra, and has received high praise for presenting ragtime, theater, dance, and silent film music from the early twentieth century. Their first CD, “That Teasin’ Rag”, released in 2011, has been called one of the most satisfying ragtime music collections available.
Tickets for “The General – Featuring the Peacherine Ragtime Orchestra” are $20.00 each for adults and $5.00 for students/children. Discounted tickets are available for groups. Showtime is 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased from the Peacherine’s website, www.peacherineragtime.com/store.htm, and will also be available via mail and at the door.
