The 2013 Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Annual Years of Service Recognition took place on October 18th at Woods Memorial Church in Severna Park.  Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman, 59 FGP volunteers, FGP Advisory Council members, and Anne Arundel County Department of Aging & Disabilities staff were in attendance.  The FGP volunteers were honored for their time and commitment to making a difference in the lives of children in Anne Arundel County.

FGP volunteers are older adults age 55(+) who mentor children with exceptional needs.  FGP volunteers serve at various government and non-profit locations (Head Start, Public Schools, Special Education Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Department of Social Services Family Support Center).  The program has been operating in Anne Arundel County for more than 28 years.

The annual luncheon honors volunteers for their years of service in the program.

2 volunteers received Presidential Citations for 25 (+) years of service, 3 volunteers received Governor’s citations for 15 (+) years of service, and 9 volunteers received County citations for 10 (+) years of service; the remaining volunteers received program citations.  This year’s theme was a Halloween bash.

County Executive Laura Neuman greeted the volunteers and expressed her gratitude for the exceptional years of service that the Foster Grandparent Program has devoted to the County.  County Executive Neuman recognized the effort and energy that each volunteer devotes to children in need, stating that with everything that they bring each day to the County, “I’m not going to call you Seniors, I’m going to say you’re experienced.”
