On October 4, 2013, at approximately 12:41 p.m., officers of the Western District responded to the area of MD. Route 3 South and MD. Route 32 for a crash involving two vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers located a collision on southbound Route 3 involving a Nissan Murano operated by Terry Lynn Delorge of the 300 block of Argus Lane in Glen Burnie, Maryland and Subaru Legacy operated by Celeste Leffingwell Loftin of the 2000 block of Willow Hill Rd. in Annapolis, Maryland. Anne Arundel County Fire Department Personnel responded and pronounced the driver of the Subaru dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Traffic Safety Section responded and assumed the investigation. The initial investigation revealed the Subaru merged from Route 32 West onto Route 3 South into the path of the Nissan. The Nissan was traveling in the right hand lane of Route 3 South. The Nissan was unable to avoid the collision and struck the driver’s side of the Subaru. Both vehicles then came to rest in the roadway.
The driver and passenger (Thomas Warren Delorge of the same address) of the Nissan were transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates neither excessive speed nor alcohol were factors in this crash. The driver of the Subaru was wearing safety belts and the air bags deployed, yet this did not lessen the severity of her injuries. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were also wearing safety belts. The combination of seat belt usage and airbags prevented further injuries to the occupants of the Nissan.
There are no similar characteristics to the August 27, 2013, multiple fatal crash other than the location. This crash occurred on Route 3 during free-flowing light to moderate traffic and was the result of a merging vehicle failing to yield.
The Traffic Safety Section is continuing this investigation.
