Jacob’s Ride Comes Home Tomorrow

Annapolis resident, Jacob Landis, 24, traveled more than 10,500 miles on his bicycle and visited all 30 major league baseball stadiums across the country to raise money and awareness for cochlear implant surgeries. Deaf by age 10, Jacob received a cochlear implant allowing him to be fully functional in a hearing world. Unfortunately, a hit and run accident in South Florida made it impossible for Jacob to finish the last 180 miles of his Ride by bike.

Jacob’s Ride kicked off on April 3rd when he left his home in Annapolis, Md., and finished at Marlins Park in Miami, Fl. on September 24. Jacob was driven the last 180 miles of the Ride due to the accident and walked his bike through the finish line at Marlin Park.

On Wednesday, October 2nd Whole Foods Annapolis will hold a Welcome Home Celebration for Jacob from 4-6pm. Annapolis Town Centre at Parole.

Jacob was on his way to the Jacob’s Ride finale in Miami, Fl. scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 when this incident occurred.  The Polk County, Fl. Sheriff’s office has opened an investigation.

Despite the accident Jacob attended the Jacob’s Ride Finale in Miami and was cheered on by supporters as he walked his bike through the finish line at Marlin Park.  The Marlins held a press conference for Jacob and introduced him on field.

Hearing impairment is now the number two birth defect among children born in America. With over 500,000 Americans living in the U.S. with severe to profound hearing loss, cochlear implants are the most successful medical intervention for those profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing.  Jacob’s Ride is a donor-directed fund created under The Annapolis Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Proceeds from Jacob’s Ride will be distributed to foundations who help CI candidates including The Gift of Hearing Foundation in Narragansett, R.I.; The Listening Center in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD.; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.; and the J.W. Pickle Foundation in Nashville, TN.
