Continental Congress Festival September 11-14

continentalcongressThe free 2013 National Continental Congress Festival, celebrating and re-enacting the 1786 Annapolis Convention that led to Philadelphia and a new Constitution, will take place Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 11-14 at the Annapolis Lodge, 162 Conduit Street, featuring:

  • The “America’s Forgotten 14 Presidents of Congress” exhibit, including a signed document by each of the 14 Presidents of Congress (before George Washington), owned by the Brown family of Annapolis.
  • The debut of the new film, “Annapolis: 1783-86” by Annapolis City TV including the resignation of George Washington before Congress (1783), the ratification of the Treaty of Paris (1784), the appointment of Thomas Jefferson as a minister to France (1784) and the 1786 Annapolis Convention
  • The “Great Challenges Facing America” discussions, similar to the talks held by the delegates to the Annapolis Convention in 1786
  • Events and films for people of all ages, including children, students and teachers (with free food samples!)
  • A live Re-enactment of the 1786 Annapolis National Convention.

Join the Mayor of Annapolis, the Anne Arundel County Executive (invited) and the President of the Maryland Senate on Opening Night, Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6:00pm to hear about Great Challenges Facing the United States Abroad by Dr. Gregory Stanton of George Mason University’s Genocide Watch, including the atrocities committed by the Syrian government—and whether the United States should act. Opening Ceremonies include a live, half-hour performance by the United States Naval Academy Ensemble before the talk.

The festival continues on Thursday night, Sept. 12 with Great Challenges Facing the United States At Home with Dick D’Amato and Friday night, Sept. 13 with Great Challenges Facing Maryland and the States with Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch. Saturday, Sept. 14 will feature an all-day celebration with sidewalk tables, colonial-attired actors, morning, afternoon and evening events all over the city of Annapolis and a grand finale featuring a live re-enactment of the 1786 Annapolis Convention featuring James Madison and Alexander Hamilton.
