County Executive Laura Neuman unveiled the Independence Room, an accessible conference room, at the Anne Arundel County Aging and Disability Resource Center located in the Heritage Office Complex in Annapolis, MD.  The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 12:30 p.m. on September 10, 2013 at 2664 Riva Road.  The event included the presentation of an Executive Citation and remarks from County Executive Neuman.

“Our County offices should be accessible to all of our residents,” said Executive Neuman.  “Just as we work to make sure we have an open and transparent government, that accessibility must also extend to our physical location.  I am certain that this new Center will be enjoyed by our residents for years to come.”

County Executive Neuman also revealed that the room is to be called the Independence Room, as recommended by members of the Commission on Disability Issues.

Remarks were also given by representatives from the Commission on Disability Issues and the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.  “This room promises to set the bar for accommodating individuals with disabilities and will be a valuable resource center for aging and disability issues for the public and employees alike,” explained Pam Jordan, Director of the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.  “The Independence Room is the result of collaboration between many County Departments and will serve to reinforce the importance of reducing and eliminating barriers to public service.”

The room currently features assisted listening devices and speaker systems, power doors, an accessible ramp, and tables and chairs that can be easily arranged in a variety of configurations.  The room will soon be enhanced by Smart Board technology.  Donated artwork from this year’s Artists Without Limits Art Exhibit adorns the walls.  The doors to the room were officially opened and guests toured the facility.
