Is Obscenity Obsolete?

St. Johns COllegeSt. John’s College tutor William Braithwaite will give a lecture titled “Is Obscenity Obsolete?” at St. John’s College. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m.

The lecture will explore the Supreme Court’s efforts to determine a legal definition of the obscene following its 1957 decision that obscenity was not to be within the constitutional protection afforded to political speech under the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment.

Braithwaite received his bachelor of arts from the Virginia Military Institute and his juris doctorate from Washington and Lee University. He was an associate professor of law at Loyola University from 1979 until 1995, when he joined the faculty at St. John’s College.
