Lightning Shuts Down BWI, Injures 1. Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport shut down for a few hours Thursday after lightning struck the tower and injured an air traffic controller. The severe weather also caused several delays. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that lightning struck the airport’s air traffic control tower around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, which led to suspended flight operations for nearly three hours.

MD Fights West Nile With Mosquito Spraying. Maryland is spraying areas of Anne Arundel County to control mosquitoes after the detection of West Nile virus. The Department of Agriculture said heavy rain earlier in the summer hatched a high concentration of mosquitoes that can spread the disease in the area. Officials said the spraying on Wednesday night targeted a one-mile radius around the home of a person who was infected with the virus.

Fractured Prune Expanding Nationwide. A local legend in the doughnut industry is planning a big expansion. Fans of The Fractured Prune will soon be able to get the colorful hand-dipped treats nationwide. Over the next six months, the company will be adding 50 new stores to its already popular franchise. The newest is in Utah, but in the future, doughnut lovers in Maryland can also expect to see a new one pop up in the Inner Harbor.

Elkridge Father Charged In Shaken Baby Death. Howard County police have charged an Elkridge man with shaking his 6-week-old baby girl to death. Police and paramedics were called to 26-year-old Aron James Krampf’s home in the 6000 block of Ducketts Lane around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an unconscious infant who was not breathing. The baby, Krampf’s daughter, was transported to Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital.
