Quality Health Foundation (QHF), the charitable branch of Quality Health Strategies (QHS), recently awarded $20,000 to Partners In Care Maryland for its Ride Partners transportation program.

QHF awarded grants totaling $350,200 to ten organizations across the State of Maryland that support local healthcare-related quality improvement efforts. Since 2006, Quality Health Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $2.65 million to 49 organizations in Maryland and the District of Columbia. This year’s awardees were selected from approximately 45 charitable, not-for-profit applicants. Funding decisions were determined by a project’s potential to impact access to quality healthcare and human services, particularly among area underserved populations.

“We are pleased to single out these organizations.” said Brenda Crabbs, Chair of the QHF Board of Directors. “Their work is perfectly aligned with our mission to improve the health status of individuals and communities.

The Ride Partners program of Partners In Care Maryland (PIC) has been critical in providing access to healthcare for the growing population of older adults. PIC volunteer members use their own cars to provide approximately 9,000 arm-in-arm rides per year from a person’s front door to doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and other destinations in Talbot, Anne Arundel, Frederick and Calvert Counties.

Partners In Care CEO Barbara Huston says, “We are grateful to the Quality Health Foundation for funding for transportation across our four sites. Medical facilities in these areas will provide great healthcare once a person gets there, but they have to get there. That point is so often lost in the shuffle for scarce resources.”

In addition to transportation services, additional Partners In Care initiatives support caregivers; help people obtain benefits and resources they are entitled to for economic security; help people maintain their homes for safe and independent living, help isolated seniors shelter in place and access emergency services if needed; help combat isolation with social activities; and provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for people to use their time and talents to stay engaged in the community.  All programs are intended to help older adults remain independent in their own homes and connected to the community.

Partners In Care’s Anne Arundel County office is celebrating its 20th year in 2013. The Frederick County office opened in 1998, Talbot County in 2009, and Calvert County in 2011.
