Trench Collapse In Severn Kills One

Around 10 a.m. August 19, 2013, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to a report of a worker trapped in a trench located behind a residence in the 1000 block of Leyton Lane in the Severn area of Anne Arundel County.

Upon arrival, Firefighters received information that a 25 year-old construction worker was operating in a 7 foot deep trench when the dirt surrounding the trench suddenly collapsed burying him. The company had been contracted to construct a deck at the residence.  It took 45 personnel including Technical Rescue teams from Anne Arundel and Howard County Fire/EMS Departments, as well as, Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works approximately 3 ½ hours to recover the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maryland Occupation Safety and Health (MOSH) are currently investigating the incident.  No other injuries were reported.

A trench along the side of a house in the 1000 block of Leyton Lane in Severn has claimed the life of a man.

About 1000am this morning, crews responded to the residence to find a subject trapped in a collapsed trench. By 1030am, there was a secondary collapse of the trench and crews requested additional help from neighboring jurisdictions in Howard County. Crews were unable to affect a rescue and now fire crews are working to recover the body of the victim.

Details regarding the victim, his employment, or the specifics of the trench have not been released.
