Pit Bull Attacks Three Children In Laurel

On August 21, 2013, at 11:27 a.m., officers from the Western District responded to a report of a dog attack in the 300 block of Dameron South in Laurel. Initial information relayed to officers indicated three children were attacked in the neighborhood while walking with their babysitter.

Upon arrival, officers learned that three juvenile females were suffering from minor bite and scratch wounds inflicted by a two-year-old Pit Bull Terrier that was now confined in the home of its owner located on the same street as the attack. The children, ages 2, 4 and 6, were all from the same family. The investigation revealed the animal escaped from its yard because a fence gate was left open. The adult babysitter stated that the dog saw the children, darted out of the yard and commenced the attack. During the commotion, the babysitter was able to retreat with the children to their residence in the 300 block of Dameron South. Officers learned the animal was now confined in its owner’s residence. Officers requested Animal Control to respond and it was learned that the Pit Bull did not have a current rabies vaccination. The Pit Bull was seized without incident and taken to the Animal Control facility for investigation and quarantine.

Further investigation by responding patrol units revealed an additional victim of this animal attack after a door to door canvas of the neighborhood was conducted. The victim, a 66-year-old female from the 300 block of Dameron South, reported she was taking out the trash when she was attacked by the same dog today. The animal lunged and knocked her to the ground, causing a minor head injury and wounds to her knee. The woman’s sister saw the attack and fended the dog off with a broom.

The three children were either treated with first aid or taken to Laurel Regional Hospital, where they were treated and released. The 66-year-old victim refused medical treatment. The owner(s) of the Pit Bull have been notified of the incident. This investigation is continuing and has been turned over to Animal Control.
