Baysox Stumble Against Rock Cats

Baysox 2013IMG_9694The Baysox fell behind by six runs early and could never catch up in a 7-4 loss to New Britain Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Baysox fall to three games behind Erie for the wild card spot in the Eastern League playoffs.

“We had some opportunities to get back in it and we just couldn’t deliver that big hit,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “We couldn’t get it tight enough where it would mean something in the eighth and ninth, but I thought we threw out some hits. We just stranded a few guys.”

New Britain took an early lead in the top of the first inning against Baysox starter Devin Jones. Danny Santana drew a lead off walk and Eddie Rosario followed with a single to left field. Santana was caught stealing with Nate Hanson batting and with two outs, Miguel Sano put the Rock Cats on the board with a two-run home run to left field to make the score 2-0.

The Rock Cats added to the lead in the top of the third inning. With one out, Santana singled to center field and stole second base before scoring on a Rosario double to right field. Rosario moved to third base on a groundout and scored on a two-out wild pitch to give New Britain a 4-0 lead.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning against New Britain starter Pedro Hernandez. First baseman Caleb Joseph hit a lead off double to center field and right fielder Lew Ford followed with a double to left field that plated Joseph and made the score 4-1.

New Britain extended the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Hanson drew a lead off walk and Sano followed with his second home run of the game. Danny Ortiz and Brad Boyer then walked before Clay Schrader replaced Jones on the mound with one out. With two outs, Kyle Knudson singled to center field to score Ortiz and give the Rock Cats a 7-1 lead.

Bowie cut into the Rock Cats lead in the bottom of the seventh inning against New Britain reliever Daniel Sattler. Second baseman Garabez Rosa hit a lead off single to center field and left fielder Kyle Hudson followed with a double to left field. With one out, Rosa scored on a Buck Britton single to center field and Joseph followed with an infield single that plated Hudson. With two outs, shortstop Niuman Romero walked to load the bases and third baseman Brandon Waring followed with a walk to bring home the third run of the inning and make the score 7-4.New Britain reliever Matt Hauser replaced Sattler on the mound to record the final out of the inning.

Jones took the loss for Bowie, pitching five and one-third innings and allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out four and walking four. Schrader pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits while striking out three. Reliever Zech Zinicola pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Baysox, allowing one hit. Righty Oliver Drake pitched the ninth inning, not allowing a hit while walking one and striking out two.

Hernandez earned the win for New Britain pitching six innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out two and walking two. Hauser picked up his third save of the season, pitching the final two and one-third scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two.

LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 5.52) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a four game home series against the Binghamton Mets.

The Baysox are home through Thursday, Aug. 29 for the final eight game home stand of the season against New Britain and Binghamton. Highlights include Mutt Monday Aug. 26 at 7:05 p.m. and Tightwad Tuesday Aug. 27 beginning at 7:05 p.m.
