Baysox Drop Waterlogged Game

Baysox 2013IMG_9706After waiting through a nearly two hour rain delay in the third inning, the Baysox (68-68) fell to the Binghamton Mets (84-53) 7-4 Wednesday night to remain four games behind Erie for a playoff spot with six games to play.

Binghamton took an early lead in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter Mike Wright. Wilfredo Tovar and Richard Lucas each walked to start the inning and Daniel Muno hit a one out single to left field that scored Tovar and moved Lucas to third base. Lucas scored on a wild pitch to give the B-Mets a 2-0 lead.

The skies opened up in the top of the third inning, leading to a 1 hour 58 minute rain delay that ended the night for both starting pitchers.

The B-Mets added a run in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox reliever Zech Zinicola. Muno hit a lead off double to right field and scored on a two-out Allan Dykstra single to left field to give Binghamton a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning against Binghamton reliever Hamilton Bennett. Left fielder Garabez Rosa hit a lead off single to center field and right fielder Dariel Alvarez followed with a walk. Shortstop Niuman Romero then hit a two-out single to center field that plated Rosa and made the score 3-1.

Binghamton added to the lead again in the top of the sixth inning. Tovar hit a one-out double to center field and moved to third base on a fielding error by center fielder Kyle Hudson before scoring on a two out Alonzo Harris double that gave the B-Mets a 4-1 lead

The B-Mets added a few insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Tim Bascom. The first three batters of the inning singled, with the third single bringing home a run and a throwing error advancing runners to second and third base with no outs. A Harris sacrifice fly brought home the second run of the inning and Bascom walked the next two batters to load the bases with one out. The final run of the inning scored on a Josh Rodriguez sacrifice fly to give Binghamton a 7-1 lead.

The Baysox got one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning against reliever Ryan Fraser. Second baseman Buck Britton hit a lead off single to right field and moved to second base on a single to left field by designated hitter Caleb Joseph. Britton advanced to third base when Seth Loman reached on a groundout that eliminated Joseph at second and third baseman Brandon Waring brought Britton home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-2.

Bowie kept chipping away in the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, catcher Brian Ward was hit by a pitch and Hudson then reached on a fielding error. Romero advanced both runners on a groundout and they both scored on a two-out double to right field by Britton to make the score 7-4

Wright pitched two and one-third innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking two in the loss. Zinicola pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three. Reliever Marcel Prado pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Baysox, allowing a hit and striking out one. Bascom pitched the final two innings for the Baysox, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two.

Bennett earned the win for Binghamton, pitching three innings after the rain delay and allowing one run on two hits while striking out two and walking one.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jason Hammel, who is making a Major League rehab appearance, takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the final game in a four game home series against the Binghamton Mets. He will be opposed by RHP Erik Goeddel (9-6, 3.83).

The Baysox conclude the regular season home schedule Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7:05 p.m. The team plays the final five games of the season on the road in Erie beginning Friday.
