The Baysox (68-66) scored 11 runs in the first three innings and starter Eduardo Rodriguez pitched eight shutout innings in a commanding 11-0 win for Bowie over Binghamton (82-53) Monday. With the win, the Baysox remain three games out of the wild card spot in the Eastern League playoffs.
Bowie’s offense got off to a strong start, recording nine hits and 11 runs in the first three innings against Binghamton starter Noah Syndergaard. Center fielder Trayvon Robinson recorded three hits, three runs and three runs batted in while second baseman Buck Britton drove in four runs on two hits.
“[Kyle] Hudson and Robinson made that whole first inning – they really set the tempo,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “Hudson really got his barrel to the pitch tonight and Robinson firms up a base hit with two strikes. Then we go first to third and home to second and then all of a sudden it puts Buck [Britton] in a good spot and then things get going. We put together a big second inning with back-to-back home runs and it was just a really good effort.”
Rodriguez tied a career high with eight shutout innings pitched, allowing two runs while not issuing a walk and striking out five in the win.
“He was sensational,” Kendall said. “I usually stick to words like average or above average but the last three starts he has been lights out. It’s encouraging that he is in our dugout because down the road he is going to be a big plus for this organization.”
The Baysox jumped out to an early lead against Syndergaard. Left fielder Kyle Hudson hit a lead off single to right field and moved to third base on a single to center field by Robinson. Britton kept things going with a single to right field that plated Hudson and moved Robinson to third base. Catcher Caleb Joseph reached on a throwing error by the second baseman that allowed Robinson to score and with two outs, Josh Horton brought two more runs home with a double to right field to give Bowie a 4-0 lead.
Bowie kept piling it on in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back home runs. Designated hitter Luis Martinez hit a lead off single to left field and Robinson hit a one-out infield single. Britton then hit a three-run homer and Joseph followed with a solo shot to left field to make the score 8-0.
The Baysox added to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. After two walks, Robinson hit a three-run homer with two-outs to give the Baysox an 11-0 lead.
Reliever Tim Bascom pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Baysox to finish the game.
Syndergaard took his first loss at the Double-A level, pitching three innings and allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out five.
RHP Tyler Wilson (7-3, 3.42) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team plays the second game in a four game home series against the Binghamton Mets. He will be opposed by RHP Logan Verrett (11-6, 4.37).
The Baysox are home through Thursday, Aug. 29 for the final eight game home stand of the season against New Britain and Binghamton. Highlights include Tightwad Tuesday Aug. 27 beginning at 7:05 p.m. and Baysox for a Buck Night Wednesday Aug. 28 beginning at 7:05 p.m.
