As we first reported, Ward Six Alderman Kenny Kirby’s candidacy to retain his seat has been challenged.

In a letter addressed to the Board of Elections, a group of 22 residents of the Ward are asking the City to enforce the City Charter; specifically Title 2, Sec. 3(c) which states:

Aldermen, except those first elected from areas annexed to the city, shall be registered voters in the city for at least one (1) year immediately preceding their election and a registered voter in the ward from which they are elected for at least six (6) months and must have resided in that ward for at least six (6) months immediately preceding the date of the general election.

Unaffiliated Ward 6 Candidate Steven Conn was among the signatories.

Kirby listed his address as 1236 Crows Nest Court. That property, according to public records is owned by Charlotte M. Brown and her principal residence. Brown purchased the home (previously foreclosed) from the bank in 2010.

The group closes by stating that this challenge “is not personal, political, or a statement about Mr. Kirby’s job performance as Alderman, rather, a means to ensure the integrity of our system and the upcoming City election.”
