A car operated by a 22-year old woman plunged approximately 40′ into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after colliding with a tractor trailer. The accident happened shortly after 8:00pm on the eastbound span.
Once the vehicle hit the water, the woman was able to escape and swim to a nearby jetty at Sandy Point State Park. When rescuers got to her, she was conscious but reportedly had several fractures. She was flow to shock-trauma with non-life threatening conditions.
Currently the eastbound span is closed and there is two-way traffic on the westbound span while engineers examine the bridge to verify structural integrity.
Motorists should expect delays in the area for quite some time.
