AT&T Contributes $50K To STEM Studies

stemRecognizing the importance of strengthening science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, AT&T contributed $50,000 to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation to support the 2013 Summer STEM Program at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA).  More than 600 8th-11th grade students from around the country in June visited the USNA for a week of hands-on experiences in a variety of STEM fields.

AT&T’s contribution specifically supported lower-income Hispanic and female students who required financial assistance in order to attend the program.

Denis Dunn, regional vice president for AT&T in Maryland, announced the contribution during a recent visit to the USNA.

“AT&T’s commitment to education and STEM is as much a part of our legacy as our future, and we work with schools and other organizations nationwide to help inspire students to learn and excel in the STEM disciplines,” said Dunn.  “The USNA’s Summer STEM Program is a great way to introduce students to potential careers, and we’re proud to work with the USNA to make this program possible.”

According to John Rudder, director of corporate and foundation relations for the United States Naval Academy Foundation, Summer STEM program students worked on projects in forensics, robotics, fabrication, programming, aviation, electronics and more. The program, which offered students the opportunity to tour labs and research areas, engage in hands-on activities, and participate in design challenges and competitions, was taught jointly by USNA faculty and midshipmen.

”The Summer STEM program is a powerful way of inspiring young people to explore learning and eventual careers in the critical science, technology, engineering and mathematics and disciplines, and the Naval Academy is committed to the continued growth and strength of the program,” said Rudder. “Support from corporate and foundation partners plays a vital role in our ability to realize our vision for Summer STEM, and we are grateful for AT&T’s generosity.”

AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have given more than $97 million to support STEM initiatives since 1987. Projects supported by AT&T contributions range from STEM scholarship programs and science/math focused summer camps for at risk youth to hands-on technology labs and elite robotics competitions at the nation’s leading universities.

In addition to its overall funding of innovative STEM programs, AT&T remains focused on improving opportunities for STEM learning in K-12 education while helping at risk youth prepare for work in the 21st century. AT&T has incorporated an emphasis on STEM in the second phase of Aspire, the company’s signature education initiative to improve high school graduation rates and better prepare students for college and careers.

The U.S. Naval Academy Foundation helps to advance the Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Alumni Association by providing private resources to achieve and maintain a broad range of mission-enhancing activities that support the nation’s premier leadership institution and its graduates.
