Aeros Put Baysox To Sleep

Baysox 2013IMG_0121The Baysox offense mustered just four hits and scored their only run in the first inning in a 3-1 loss to the Akron Aeros Wednesday. The loss snaps a four game winning streak for the Baysox.

“It was a good game, but we just couldn’t get it going or put any hits together,” said Manager Gary Kendall. “[Tyler] Wilson went out and kept us in the game. He did his job for six innings and the bullpen pitched OK outside of one inning where we had a mix-up with some signs.”

After the first inning where Bowie scored a run on two hits, the team managed just two hits the rest of the game. Otherwise the Baysox offense was completely shut out, going down 1-2-3 in four different innings.

Baysox starter Tyler Wilson pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one in the loss.

“I think early in the game I pitched into some deep counts and that is something that I would like to try and avoid to avoid predictable situations and the pressure of having to make quality pitches late in counts,” Wilson said. “Mostly we just did a good job of pounding the zone and throwing strikes and making them hit the ball.”

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Akron starter Matt Packer. Shortstop Niuman Romero hit a one out single to center field, stole second base and scored when first baseman Seth Loman hit a two-out single to center field that made the score 1-0.

Akron scored a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning against Wilson. Justin Toole hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second base when Jose Ramirez singled to right field. Both runners advanced on a Matt Lawson sacrifice bunt and Toole scored on a Tyler Holt groundout. Jesus Aguilar followed with a single to center field to plate Ramirez and give the Aeros the lead.

The Aeros added a run in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Zech Zinicola. Ramirez drew a lead off walk and Lawson followed with a single to shortstop. Holt then plated Ramirez with a single to left field to make the score 3-1.

Zinicola pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Lefty Chris Petrini pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Baysox, striking out two.

Packer earned the win for Akron, pitching six innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one. Jose Flores picked up his 10th save of the season, allowing one hit in the ninth inning.

Tomorrow, the Baysox depart on a five day, seven game road trip to Harrisburg leading up to the All-Star Break Tuesday, July 9. LHP Wei-Yin Chen (0-0, 7.20) takes the mound for the Baysox on a Major League rehab assignment and he will be opposed by RHP Blake Treinen (6-6, 3.61).
